Waiver Wire Advice: Week 16

And here's your second post of the night: Mike's waiver wire suggestions for this fantasy super bowl week. If any of you are playing in Week 17 and are interested in getting more links for lineup help next week, leave a comment so that I can pull something together for you!

Here we are in the final week (for most people) of fantasy football for 2014. We’ve been through four months of draft research, hand-wringing over starting lineup decisions, waiver wire analysis, frustration and elation. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the process, because we all do this for fun, right?

I hope that you don’t have to go to the waiver wire this week for a starter in your finals, because the wire isn’t pretty this week, but let’s take a closer look at a couple developing situations.

DeMarco Murray has led many a fantasy team to the finals this season. It was revealed yesterday that he had surgery for a broken hand. Early reports indicate Murray will play through the injury, but if you have Murray (or even if you don’t), it’s vital that you try to get Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar on your roster. There is no next week, so drop any player that you won’t be using this week, get Randle and Dunbar on your team, and monitor the situation this week. I’d expect Randle to have the primary role if Murray is out, but Dunbar’s role should be fairly significant even if Murray plays, as Murray’s ability to catch will likely be hampered.

If you’re desperate at QB, you could do worse than Robert Griffin III versus Philadelphia this week. The Eagles will surely be piling up points quickly against the putrid Redskins defense, so it will be on RGIII to try and keep pace. He looked a bit more spry in his appearance last week, and the Eagles have a very suspect pass defense. Hopefully you have safer options, but RGIII is a high-upside desperation play. Oh and if Mark Sanchez is available in your league, I’d consider playing him over all but the top-tier QBs.

This will be my last waiver article of the season. Thanks to everyone who everyone who took the time to read, and hopefully it helped you out at some point during the season. Best of luck to everyone in the finals.

On to the links…..
NikBonaddio from Numberfire notes that Frank Gore may be out this week, and recommends taking a look at Carlos Hyde.
Brad Evans of Yahoo likes RGIII’s chances of putting up big numbers this week.
Adam Levitan from Rotoworld likes Harry Douglas and Malcom Floyd as WR additions
Christopher Harris from ESPN suggests adding Joseph Randle and Carlos Hyde, and has some speculative finds for those playing in Week 17.

Nice post. I like it. One-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan is set to return next week after missing a month and a half because of a groin injury. He couldn’t have chosen a better time with the Raptors playing all four games at home against the likes of Philadelphia and Detroit. If an owner is foolish and impatient enough to let DeRozan go, snag him up before it’s too late.

A hiatus

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. This has been an almost surreal and definitely heartbreaking experience and I appreciate the support in each and every one of your notes. Caroline will be honored and loved always. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers - they mean the world to our family. I have been a very poor blogger this month and feel I owe you all an explanation, particularly as this is crunch time for draft prep. I hope this is not too personal of a look into my life since I know most of you are just here for the football. I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and we have learned that our baby (a little girl!) has triploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that means she has three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. The doctors have explained that it's a completely random occurrence and fairly rare that she has made it this far along, but tha...

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. Check out the info on the FSTA site for more details and be sure to e-mail me your submissions. Now, onto Week 1! First up, let's get to some of this...

2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet

Friends, I've got a first draft of the 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet up here as a google doc. If you're new to this annual spreadsheet or need a refresher, here's the scoop. I take the top 200 or so overall rankings that are freely offered by a handful of sites and I average out their rankings for each player. I also take the standard deviation to see how a player's rankings differ among experts, and add that in as another component to give you a sense of how much consensus there is on a player. I drew from the following sites this year: FFToolbox, CBSSports.com (both Jamey and Dave), ESPN, FFCalc's ADP, The Fake Football, The Football Girl, NFL.com, DavidGonos.com, SI, Yahoo, FantasyPros.com, and RealTime Fantasy Sports. All offered roughly a top 200 overall ranking and you can see each site's ranking (gathered 8/20/14) in the second tab on the spreadsheet. You'll see that I really haven't fleshed it out a ton yet - I still have to ge...
