Mock drafts abound

I filled in at the last minute for a mock draft last Thursday night with the FFToday staff - it ended up being only an okay draft for me, but it was excellent prep for 2008. And though my team/draft got no love at all from the FFToday guys (as evidenced in the votes for best draft on this Team by Team Recap), I still enjoyed getting a chance to draft with real live people this early in the season. Check out the Round by Round recap of the mock draft - it was a 10-team, serpentine draft with 16 rounds to field a 1 QB/ 2 RB/ 3 WR/ 1 TE/ 1 K/ 1 DEF lineup and the scoring system is noted on the recap page.

Fortunately I´ll have a chance to redeem myself later this week with a mock draft via email with West Coast Nonsense and his crew of football bloggers. I´ll keep you posted on how that mock draft goes...

Okay, I've been chugging my coffee like a Maxwell House pledge this morning, so I'm feeling a bit overly caffeinated. Let's dive into the football links for today:
  • Is Greg Jones worth keeping an eye on this year? Read CBS' Press Box View: Jaguars on the run for thoughts on whether or not Jones will eat into MJD or Taylor's fantasy production.
  • For those of you in auction leagues, check out Ask The Commish's Fantasy Football Auction Values.
  • ProFantasySports has some unique thoughts on guys you might be able to snag for cheap this year in Don´t sleep on these potential draft values...good stuff and thanks for the new names and thoughts, PFS.
  • I think you all know how much I enjoy a good offensive line ranking so take a look at what The Huddle has up so far with their oline analysis
  • FF Geek Blog is starting to churn out their power rankings, which will be updated throughout the summer. Check out their rankings for WR, RB and QB so far.

You know, your team wasn't bad. Personally, I wasn't thrilled with Ronnie Brown as a #2 RB due to his ACL tear and compared to the other teams I wasn't sure Gonzalez was as competitive a #3 WR as other teams. Cutler could be great, but having him as your only QB may have cost you some preseason points. I liked the Turner pick as insurance for Brown not returning to form. Not at all a bad team, just a few more identifiable holes than some others. You should see the mess I drafted last night in a mock...

Thanks Shed Horn - I'd certainly be interested in how this team would do during the season. I probably have way more faith in Anthony Gonzalez than most (or maybe too little faith in Marvin??), but WR3s are crapshoots anyway. I did grab Garrard as a complement to Cutler, which could be a successful move - time will tell I suppose. But thanks for the comments and I bet your mock draft didn't go nearly as poorly as you thought either...

I loved the Garrard pick. Chester Taylor could work out pretty well, too; even if Peterson doesn't get injured, they're still going to split carries (and production). A few questions...

1. Do you know of any mock drafts or ADP lists that account for IDP leagues? I need to know when to reach for Patrick Willis.

2a. I noticed FFToolbox has handy SoS rankings sortable by both position and week ranges. Does anyone else offer playoff-specific SoS rankings?

2b. More broadly, on the earlier "reviewing the reviewers" tack, who would you say has the most accurate SoS rankings?

Glad you liked the Garrard and Taylor picks. As for your questions:
1. Try KFFL's ADP info: http://www.kffl.com/static/programs/football/average-draft-position/index.php?sheet=All&type=IDP - it includes IDPs and I'm seeing Patrick Willis listed as the first defender with an ADP of 74.33. Or try FantasyFootball.com's list (select All w/IDP from the drop-down) and you'll see Willis with an average ADP of 56.30: http://www.fantasyfootball.com/tools/draftposition/

2. You're right, FFToolbox does have a solid strength of schedule (SoS) including the fantasy playoffs stretch (http://www.fftoolbox.com/football/strength_of_schedule.cfm?type=f) - in general though, there aren't a ton of SoS rankings out there. While I think SoS is certainly an interesting element to your draft prep, I think there's too much variation year-to-year for most defenses for the pre-season SoS to hold a ton of stock. In my opinion (and feel free to disagree!), I think SoS is probably best used part of the way through the season when you're thinking about trades and who to grab off the waiver wire. By then you have a better sense of how the defenses are going to play out for the season. There are other draft prep tools that I think have a better track record in predicting fantasy success than SoS, so I'm not sure it's worth ranking the various SoS lists out there. Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. A hiatus

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. This has been an almost surreal and definitely heartbreaking experience and I appreciate the support in each and every one of your notes. Caroline will be honored and loved always. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers - they mean the world to our family. I have been a very poor blogger this month and feel I owe you all an explanation, particularly as this is crunch time for draft prep. I hope this is not too personal of a look into my life since I know most of you are just here for the football. I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and we have learned that our baby (a little girl!) has triploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that means she has three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. The doctors have explained that it's a completely random occurrence and fairly rare that she has made it this far along, but tha
