Start/Sit Sites for Week 5 = Useless

After analyzing this week's Start/Sit sites for WRs I have reached the conclusion that one should never use these sites for WR help. WR performances are just too varied from week to week and apparently no one can very accurately predict which players will do well and which won't. So my best advice? Don't use these sites for WR help unless you are so desperate that you're willing to listen to advice that is perilous at best. Of the 8 sites that I looked at, only 2 ended up with suggested starters that performed better than their suggested benchers. Sad. So here are the top two performers of the week:

1. CoachBox Start/Bench
Suggested starters average ranking for the week: 28.5
Suggested starters average fantasy points for the week: 6.5
Suggested benchers average ranking for the week: 42.5
Suggested benchers average fantasy points for the week: 6.21

2. SI Start 'em Sit 'em
Suggested starters average ranking for the week: 32.75
Suggested starters average fantasy points for the week: 5.4
Suggested benchers average ranking for the week: 36
Suggested benchers average fantasy points for the week: 8.44

And yet I still don't think either of these sites were any good - SI had the #3 and #6 performer of the week on the bench; CoachBox also had #3 on the bench (#3 being Galloway). So while I suppose these two sites should be applauded to some extent, I say this week don't take these recs very seriously.

6. FantasySharks
Suggested starters average ranking for the week: 38.4
Suggested starters average fantasy points for the week: 6.4
Suggested benchers average ranking for the week: 26.5
Suggested benchers average fantasy points for the week: 8.8

Truly terrible:

8. Fantasy Football Cafe
Suggested starters average ranking for the week: 65

Suggested benchers average fantasy points for the week: 8.9

Perhaps at this point I should recommend that you look at the bench lineup on CBS Sportsline and FFCafe before choosing those as starters.

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet

Friends, I've got a first draft of the 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet up here as a google doc. If you're new to this annual spreadsheet or need a refresher, here's the scoop. I take the top 200 or so overall rankings that are freely offered by a handful of sites and I average out their rankings for each player. I also take the standard deviation to see how a player's rankings differ among experts, and add that in as another component to give you a sense of how much consensus there is on a player. I drew from the following sites this year: FFToolbox, CBSSports.com (both Jamey and Dave), ESPN, FFCalc's ADP, The Fake Football, The Football Girl, NFL.com, DavidGonos.com, SI, Yahoo, FantasyPros.com, and RealTime Fantasy Sports.
