Spring Break '09, baby!

It's Spring Break here in Boulder - the campus is deserted, my bus driver seemed uncertain that I truly needed to get off at the university during Spring Break, and there's a heavy quiet throughout the library since even the biggest of study nerds here has taken a break. I love it like this: the quiet before the storm. Much like football season; with the NFL Draft really just a few weeks away, most analysts seem to be soaking up the NCAA tournament and holding off on the flood of pre-draft analysis. That said, there are still some experts (aka the biggest fantasy nerds - and I mean that in an endearing, grateful way) out there cranking out their NFL draft and FF thoughts...
  • This is going to be a bit of a Bills fest here but by acquiring T.O., the Bills have made themselves far more newsworthy. Gregg Rosenthal takes a look at the T.O. impact on Lee Evans' fantasy value and in the end calls it a push for Evans.
  • The other piece that dissects the Bills comes from CBS Sports' series on team needs - Bills needs: Tight-end, pass-rush playmakers wanted.
  • The Fifth Down reports on a proposal that's making the NFL annual meeting rounds that would extend the NFL season to 18 games in A Longer Regular Season? What Could Go Wrong? Pardon me while I wipe up the drool here - I'd love an 18-game season.
  • You've gotta love a mock draft article that starts off with "mock drafts are a special sort of useless" - if you're looking for the always-insightful Football Outsiders take on how the NFL Draft might evolve, take a look at their mock draft of the first round.
  • For more NFL Draft thoughts, see what KFFL has to say about the latest speculations in NFL Draft Grapevine - News and notes.

Your KFFL link goes to the FO mock draft, double-link from above.

Thanks for all you keep up with for us, even if you are a Broncos fan. At least we can all hate the Chiefs and Raiders.
Whoops - thanks for the heads up - the correct link should be in place now for the KFFL link...and go Broncos!

A hiatus

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. This has been an almost surreal and definitely heartbreaking experience and I appreciate the support in each and every one of your notes. Caroline will be honored and loved always. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers - they mean the world to our family. I have been a very poor blogger this month and feel I owe you all an explanation, particularly as this is crunch time for draft prep. I hope this is not too personal of a look into my life since I know most of you are just here for the football. I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and we have learned that our baby (a little girl!) has triploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that means she has three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. The doctors have explained that it's a completely random occurrence and fairly rare that she has made it this far along, but tha...

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. Check out the info on the FSTA site for more details and be sure to e-mail me your submissions. Now, onto Week 1! First up, let's get to some of this...

2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet

Friends, I've got a first draft of the 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet up here as a google doc. If you're new to this annual spreadsheet or need a refresher, here's the scoop. I take the top 200 or so overall rankings that are freely offered by a handful of sites and I average out their rankings for each player. I also take the standard deviation to see how a player's rankings differ among experts, and add that in as another component to give you a sense of how much consensus there is on a player. I drew from the following sites this year: FFToolbox, CBSSports.com (both Jamey and Dave), ESPN, FFCalc's ADP, The Fake Football, The Football Girl, NFL.com, DavidGonos.com, SI, Yahoo, FantasyPros.com, and RealTime Fantasy Sports. All offered roughly a top 200 overall ranking and you can see each site's ranking (gathered 8/20/14) in the second tab on the spreadsheet. You'll see that I really haven't fleshed it out a ton yet - I still have to ge...
