Week 9 Rankings, Start/Sit

There was a time in my life (and perhaps you're in that time of your life now), when I couldn't have cared less about playground mulch. Wouldn't have even known it was a thing. Put some dirt down below that playground and tell kids to watch out, I would have said. Bwaahahaha. Yes, "watch out" always seems to do the trick and keep em safe. Anyway, fast forward to now when we built an amazing play structure in our backyard replete with climbing wall and slide for our boys and we had to ask them to wait for weeks before using it since it lacked the requisite mulch to cushion their falls. (Note: asking a 5- and 2-year-old to not go down a tube slide day after day is asking them to do things of epic proportions. Many stuffed animals were thrown down the slide in their stead.) Of course the mulch turned out to require a retaining wall and this backyard project evolved into the most epic, bank account-crushing gift to our boys ever thus far, but I've spent a lot of time this week contemplating types and colors and quantity of playground mulch. I mean, it's a whole industry, my football friends. Amazing. But once it was all in place and my boys were wildly throwing themselves all over the play structure (and yes, we've already had one fall), I lay down on top of my beautiful new mulch and looked up at the most gorgeous red-leafed autumnal scene. And gave thanks for the pain the ass that this whole backyard project has been. Since here I am in good health with happy boys and time to mull over mulch and blog about football. And you, whatever else you have going on in your life, you are free to sit here and read this. So let's all get Thanksgiving-y and give thanks to whatever/whomever you want for that luxury.

But really, now I'm off my thankfulness reminder mode - you're here for the start/sits aren't you? Or maybe the rankings or IDP info? So here you go:

A hiatus

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. This has been an almost surreal and definitely heartbreaking experience and I appreciate the support in each and every one of your notes. Caroline will be honored and loved always. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers - they mean the world to our family. I have been a very poor blogger this month and feel I owe you all an explanation, particularly as this is crunch time for draft prep. I hope this is not too personal of a look into my life since I know most of you are just here for the football. I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and we have learned that our baby (a little girl!) has triploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that means she has three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. The doctors have explained that it's a completely random occurrence and fairly rare that she has made it this far along, but tha...

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. Check out the info on the FSTA site for more details and be sure to e-mail me your submissions. Now, onto Week 1! First up, let's get to some of this...

2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet

Friends, I've got a first draft of the 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet up here as a google doc. If you're new to this annual spreadsheet or need a refresher, here's the scoop. I take the top 200 or so overall rankings that are freely offered by a handful of sites and I average out their rankings for each player. I also take the standard deviation to see how a player's rankings differ among experts, and add that in as another component to give you a sense of how much consensus there is on a player. I drew from the following sites this year: FFToolbox, CBSSports.com (both Jamey and Dave), ESPN, FFCalc's ADP, The Fake Football, The Football Girl, NFL.com, DavidGonos.com, SI, Yahoo, FantasyPros.com, and RealTime Fantasy Sports. All offered roughly a top 200 overall ranking and you can see each site's ranking (gathered 8/20/14) in the second tab on the spreadsheet. You'll see that I really haven't fleshed it out a ton yet - I still have to ge...
