Rankings abound

It's been a long, full day here - we're closing on our new house in Knoxville, Tennessee at the end of the week and since we won't actually be there in person for the closing, we unexpectedly found ourselves today with 24 hours to turn around 82 pages of paperwork, which required visits to two different notary publics and multiple trips to Kinkos. Good times. But the papers are signed, the funds are being transferred...the deal is nearly sealed! Two weeks from tomorrow the movers will truck our stuff out of here and I'll be a travelin' blogger for a week or so.

In the meantime, plenty of fantasy football to talk about here:
  • With the lockout talks going so swimmingly, I feel like folks are feeling more comfortable putting rankings out there. Here are a few that have been posted or updated recently:
  • Next up, a little IDP love:
    • Footballguys.com has a great introductory article (and also really a strategy article) for those considering IDP leagues or those who want to up their game a bit. Figure out what the IDP angle is all about in Incorporating IDP Concepts.
    • Or head on over to FFToolbox.com for their 2011 IDP Sleepers for 10 names you'll want to put in the vault.
  • ProFootballFocus.com has a nice look at 2011's top RB handcuffs - it's carefully noted that these are pre-free agency selections. Frankly, what really caught my eye is that Jacquizz Rodgers should be up for player-with-the-most-awesome-name contention this season...
  • Speaking of handcuffs, more advice along those lines from FantasyFootballSharks.com with their Drafting Your Backup Quarterback article - find out which players complement the top QBs.
  • Finally, The Hazean bestowed a nice honor on this blog today - he listed his top 10 fantasy football blogs for 2011 and FFLibrarian came out on top. Much appreciated and definitely head on over to this link for The 10 Best Fantasy Football Blogs to read the other top contenders - no doubt you'll recognize many of the names, though you never know when you'll find a new favorite.

A hiatus

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. This has been an almost surreal and definitely heartbreaking experience and I appreciate the support in each and every one of your notes. Caroline will be honored and loved always. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers - they mean the world to our family. I have been a very poor blogger this month and feel I owe you all an explanation, particularly as this is crunch time for draft prep. I hope this is not too personal of a look into my life since I know most of you are just here for the football. I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and we have learned that our baby (a little girl!) has triploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that means she has three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. The doctors have explained that it's a completely random occurrence and fairly rare that she has made it this far along, but tha...

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. Check out the info on the FSTA site for more details and be sure to e-mail me your submissions. Now, onto Week 1! First up, let's get to some of this...

2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet

Friends, I've got a first draft of the 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet up here as a google doc. If you're new to this annual spreadsheet or need a refresher, here's the scoop. I take the top 200 or so overall rankings that are freely offered by a handful of sites and I average out their rankings for each player. I also take the standard deviation to see how a player's rankings differ among experts, and add that in as another component to give you a sense of how much consensus there is on a player. I drew from the following sites this year: FFToolbox, CBSSports.com (both Jamey and Dave), ESPN, FFCalc's ADP, The Fake Football, The Football Girl, NFL.com, DavidGonos.com, SI, Yahoo, FantasyPros.com, and RealTime Fantasy Sports. All offered roughly a top 200 overall ranking and you can see each site's ranking (gathered 8/20/14) in the second tab on the spreadsheet. You'll see that I really haven't fleshed it out a ton yet - I still have to ge...
