Playing the Playoffs Game

I've been impressed by the number of fantasy footballers that are getting into postseason FF this year - who knew so many people were eager to keep going? Already there are over 60 of us in the FF Librarian's Challenge via NFL.com. I thought that by the time the regular season ended and Week 18 rolled around you all might have eased off the fantasy train a bit. Not so. I say cheers to that and remind you all that if you DO want to get involved in playoff FF, that you need to do so before the games start Saturday afternoon.

Check out my posts from yesterday and Wednesday for the bulk of the playoff fantasy football links that are out there, but read on for other thoughts as well.
  • FF Geek Blog's Are you in a playoffs fantasy league? - these guys are partaking in CBS Sports' playoff challenge (CBS is also running the NFL.com challenge, I believe, hence why they sound so similar) and both Matt and Brandon offer up their lineups of choice for this first week of playoffs. Matt, your massive amount of Giants love makes me nervous, I'll be honest.
  • KFFL has rankings for Week 18 based on PPR scoring, organized by tiers: QB, RB, WR, TE, and Kicker
  • FFXtreme's Fantasy Playoff Rankings from Smitty
  • If you like your advice via video, try NBC's Fantasy Fix Playoff Props with Gregg and Tiffany (finally, some recognition that Omar Epps and Mike Tomlin are probably long lost brothers; and wow, Del Rio is possibly Principal Rooney's twin - unreal!).
Enjoy your Friday - I will be online for much of the afternoon if you have any playoffs questions. Good luck and thanks again to those of you in on the FF Librarian's Challenge!

Just thought you should know both my dad and brother won their respective fantasy leagues (on ESPN). If they say FF runs in the genes, perhaps it's about time I joined in the fun...or, I'll stick to caring about college football in the fall and only about NFL when my Seahawks keep me interested in the post-season. Know anyone who wants to give me a ticket to this weekend's Packers-'Hawks game??

A hiatus

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. This has been an almost surreal and definitely heartbreaking experience and I appreciate the support in each and every one of your notes. Caroline will be honored and loved always. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers - they mean the world to our family. I have been a very poor blogger this month and feel I owe you all an explanation, particularly as this is crunch time for draft prep. I hope this is not too personal of a look into my life since I know most of you are just here for the football. I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and we have learned that our baby (a little girl!) has triploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that means she has three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. The doctors have explained that it's a completely random occurrence and fairly rare that she has made it this far along, but tha...

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. Check out the info on the FSTA site for more details and be sure to e-mail me your submissions. Now, onto Week 1! First up, let's get to some of this...

2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet

Friends, I've got a first draft of the 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet up here as a google doc. If you're new to this annual spreadsheet or need a refresher, here's the scoop. I take the top 200 or so overall rankings that are freely offered by a handful of sites and I average out their rankings for each player. I also take the standard deviation to see how a player's rankings differ among experts, and add that in as another component to give you a sense of how much consensus there is on a player. I drew from the following sites this year: FFToolbox, CBSSports.com (both Jamey and Dave), ESPN, FFCalc's ADP, The Fake Football, The Football Girl, NFL.com, DavidGonos.com, SI, Yahoo, FantasyPros.com, and RealTime Fantasy Sports. All offered roughly a top 200 overall ranking and you can see each site's ranking (gathered 8/20/14) in the second tab on the spreadsheet. You'll see that I really haven't fleshed it out a ton yet - I still have to ge...
