Friday means football research day

So I've had a few of you ask if the average ranking positions spreadsheet I created could be manipulate to reflect your league's scoring system. Sadly, I am but one person and that is beyond the scope of what I can do - however, there are plenty of sites out there that excel at this. I've only looked at Cheat Sheets Creator a little bit but since they're in beta, they're giving their product away for free this year and it could be well worth your time. Or take a look at FFToday whose rankings can all be customized to your own system. There are probably plenty of other options out there and if you know of one, feel free to leave a suggestion in the comments section.
  • Wondering which injured players out there are risks versus those that might just come back better than ever? Or at least good enough to be worthy of a roster spot? Take a look at CBS' Draft prep: Injury risks and bounce backs.
  • FFToday's Gut Check column (worth a read every week) assesses the 2007 All-Gut Check Team and provides a look at 2008 sleepers - I like a lot of the guys mentioned here. I think I'd love playing in an all-sleeper/late round league if such a thing existed. Note that the end of the article includes updated tiers by position (though Kevin Curtis is still listed pretty highly, so keep that in mind when looking at the tiers).
  • Speaking of tiers, I'm a big fan of Rotoworld if you haven't noticed, so pay attention here - their QB Tiers of Heaven are up and worth reading, printing, plugging into your own rankings, memorizing, whatever it takes.
  • Mark St. Amant's Fantasy Football Amnesia on the NYTimes looks at how some of our favorite (and not so favorite) fantasy players have landed themselves in new situations this year and why you should be paying attention to them.

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet

Friends, I've got a first draft of the 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet up here as a google doc. If you're new to this annual spreadsheet or need a refresher, here's the scoop. I take the top 200 or so overall rankings that are freely offered by a handful of sites and I average out their rankings for each player. I also take the standard deviation to see how a player's rankings differ among experts, and add that in as another component to give you a sense of how much consensus there is on a player. I drew from the following sites this year: FFToolbox, CBSSports.com (both Jamey and Dave), ESPN, FFCalc's ADP, The Fake Football, The Football Girl, NFL.com, DavidGonos.com, SI, Yahoo, FantasyPros.com, and RealTime Fantasy Sports. All offered roughly a top 200 overall ranking and you can see each site's ranking (gathered 8/20/14) in the second tab on the spreadsheet.
