Trolling the Waiver Wire

This Thursday night, the University of Colorado (where I work) is hosting West Virginia for a nationally televised game. The university is essentially shutting down for this - it has been rather amusing to see it evolve - they've asked us all to leave work at 2:00 that day to allow for more parking spots for game-goers...and in theory to let all of us get the heck out of dodge before the swarm of traffic and fans arrive. I kind of want to just lurk around the stadium and take in all of the awesomeness of a big college game (no, I'm not actually going) but instead I will be heading to my local Apple store to purchase an iPhone. Could I be more excited? This will completely change my access to fantasy stats and my blog while I travel this fall and the best part? It's a gift from my overly-generous sister as a thanks for being her maid of honor - she's the best, isn't she?

But moving on from my glorious cell phone life, Week 3 is quickly approaching and there's lots of football advice out there, so let's get to it:
  • FantasySportsCentral.com has Fantasy Football Rankings from weeks 1-2 up - this link goes to the overall rankings but you can tweak it to view players by positions as well.
  • Fantasy Football Sharks has their waiver wire advice up in Week Three Waiver Wire Pickups. Love seeing some of my Broncos under Smokin' Hot. They've got Chansi Stuckey under Deep and/or Dynasty Only but I think he should be under the On the Radar section instead - I'm not saying run out and grab Stuckey right now but he's putting up points here...
  • FFToolbox's Week 3: Pickups of the Week starts off with Brian Griese on their list. Not sure I'm feeling the Griese love but there are a lot of people in need of QBs this season, and you could certainly do worse than Griese.
  • One of you asked about Pierre Thomas' value - the Bruno Boys list him on their Waiver Wire article for the week but they note that he may be more of an RB4...I think that might be a little low, but they're certainly right that with all the offensive talent that the Saints have right now, Thomas might be more of an afterthought for the time being.
  • ProFootballWeekly has more waiver wire thoughts in Fantasy Ticker: Make a go at J.T.O. - O'Sullivan is totally the hot waiver wire commodity this week. And when you look at his upcoming schedule, it is a bit tempting...
  • AccuScore's NFL Waiver Wire Wonders is largely more of the same guys mentioned in many of the above links, but these guys list more defenses including surprise D/STs like Atlanta and Cleveland.
  • Now on a non-waiver wire note, check out what the FFGeekBlog has to say about possible trades you might want to make this week. The Geeks note some interesting prospects in Sell high, buy low.

Yes, JT O'Sullivan is available in my NFL.com league. No, I think I will take a "Show Me" approach before deciding to pluck him from the waiver wire. He had zero points in week one, so all of his points are coming from a good week two against what might be an awful Seattle team this year. I still loved Bill Simmons' riff on JT's name during one of his podcasts. Would you rather go to a bar and grill called JT O'Sullivan's or RW McQuarters?

Wow, an iphone from your sister? I certainly didn't get that for being the best man in my brother's wedding.

Hmm, I have a strong feeling this last comment might just be from my brother-in-law. Very funny, Brian. Maybe we should test my sister's generosity limits and see how many iPhones we can get out of her. Kidding, Katie, don't worry...

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. Check out the info on the FSTA site for more details and be sure to e-mail me your submissions. Now, onto Week 1! First up, let's get to some of this

2010 Week 2 consensus start/sit

Greetings and happy weekend. I've got this week's consensus start/sit for you which is a tally of all the start/sit votes that players received in the various start/sit articles that I linked to earlier in the week. So while these aren't my personal recommendations, I do think knowing what the consensus is could be of help when making lineup decisions...so enjoy! Note: the players are listed in no particular order. QB Start: Michael Vick, Kyle Orton, Matt Ryan, Jason Campbell Sit: David Garrard, Alex Smith, Jay Cutler, Vince Young, Carson Palmer RB Start: LeSean McCoy, Darren McFadden, Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jackson Sit: Tim Hightower, C.J. Start/Sit Week 4 and a smattering of rankings

It's been awhile, my fantasy football friends. I have lofty intentions of getting several posts up here each week, but life is busy and I will do my best. So in the intervening 6 years since I've posted regularly on here, our family added another child (now there are 3!), moved back to Boulder for a sabbatical year and then returned to Knoxville, and we have basically been chugging along like many of the rest of you. My two boys (who turn 12 and 9 soon) are in a fantasy football league for the first time this year with their buddies, which ostensibly is the just the dads (and mom!) playing one another of course. But my oldest is taking it super seriously and what kind of Fantasy Football Librarian would I be if I didn't step up my game for him? So I'm back - and am interested in the fantasy landscape - lots of the same awesome sites out there, but many new ones as well. I'll try to incorporate a mix. Please be sure to let me know if my 2006 ways aren't working i
