Prelude to the average rankings

I'm amazed at how quickly the day passes when I'm not at work - I had this impression that without a job I'd be lolling around, bored and without a purpose, but turns out that beyond the whole "get to know the amazing city of New York" thing, I can actually find quite a few things to occupy my time. We'll see how long this lasts...especially as I sit in an un-airconditioned 85.1 degree apartment. We thought we could just wait out the rest of the summer without putting in a window unit but WOW it is hot and humid here.

Onto today's links...
  • We've got players returning to practice - Brandon Marshall and Chris Wells - which always makes fantasy owners happy.
  • A search for WR fantasy sleepers from Rotoworld - I can't help but believe that when Rotoworld calls you a sleeper, you immediately become the player that everyone thinks they have the inside scope on, but in reality has just become a bit overblown and is suddenly drafted about a round too early. Really it's a compliment to Rotoworld's popularity and is something to keep in mind when any big site lists their favorite sleepers.
  • I almost hate to link to Michael Vick stuff just since I think it has been WAY too much of a headline (like the Favre back and forth that continues...) but I missed the 60 Minutes with Vick last night. I caught up on it with the Fifth Down's Did You Believe Vick on '60 Minutes'?
  • Football Jabber has updated positional rankings - take a look!
  • More rankings from Fighting Chance Fantasy - QBs, RBs, and TEs so far.
  • Hatty Waiver Wire Guru has posted his first video in quite some time. He's got some thoughts up about guys to keep an eye on during the preseason.
I mentioned last week that I was working on my annual average rankings spreadsheet and it is less than 24 hours away, I think. I've gathered Top 100 rankings from 11 big sites that offer up their rankings for free (ESPN, SportingNews, CBS Sports, No-Offseason, SI, Yahoo!, KFFL, Fox Sports, Ask the Commish, NFL.com, and FFToolbox) and am pulling together an average ranking across all those sites...so stay tuned!

Excellent! Can't wait to see the analysis. Your stuff is the best. Will you by chance looking at the data from a PPR perspective as well?

Thank you so much for doing an aggregate ADP from those sites. I have been using the fantasyfootballcalculator.com ADP, and have to continually remind myself that the lineup rules for their mock draft are 2 RB, 3 WR, no flex with PPR scoring, which is overvaluing WR's if you are in a no PPR Flex league. They do have a nice feature that allows you to view the draft as a color-coded draft board, though.

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet

Friends, I've got a first draft of the 2014 Average Position Rankings spreadsheet up here as a google doc. If you're new to this annual spreadsheet or need a refresher, here's the scoop. I take the top 200 or so overall rankings that are freely offered by a handful of sites and I average out their rankings for each player. I also take the standard deviation to see how a player's rankings differ among experts, and add that in as another component to give you a sense of how much consensus there is on a player. I drew from the following sites this year: FFToolbox, CBSSports.com (both Jamey and Dave), ESPN, FFCalc's ADP, The Fake Football, The Football Girl, NFL.com, DavidGonos.com, SI, Yahoo, FantasyPros.com, and RealTime Fantasy Sports. All offered roughly a top 200 overall ranking and you can see each site's ranking (gathered 8/20/14) in the second tab on the spreadsheet.
